a sump is a smaller tank under the big tank (the tank with fish in it) to increase the overall water volume of the tank to help dilute the toxins (ie. nitrates) and a place to hide ugly heaters and HOB filters...

when a Bio Tower is added to the sump it then becomes a wet/dry filter...
