Ok i got a 20 gallon tank for free and want to use it with out spending much money and not getting any fish so i dont want to set it up as another tank. But i was thinking about using it as a sump for my 55 gallon. I am going to use my water change siphon i mage (see other thread) to get water down to it then use my fluval 305 canister to get the water back up to the tank?

will this work and will i have any benefit?
should i put anything in it?
also if i leave it empty can i use it for feeders?

Thanks.

Perhaps I'm not understanding that pvc siphon.

How far down into the tank does it go?

Seems like it will either keep sucking water out of your tank and overflow your sump or it won't reprime if your power ever shuts off and your tank will overflow.
That's why most people build a specific pvc overflow for this purpose.

How are you planning on plumbing your canister into the sump?

Also 1/2" pvc won't likely flow enough water to use for an overflow. You'd have to use such a small pump your turnover rate would be miniscule.

will not work. By a overflow box or build a pvc overflow from the sticky's

ok i built a pvc overflow and have the sump running. the 1/2 inch PVC flowes more water than the fluvol can get back up to the top of the tank so i am going tobut a pump but what size do i need?

You WANT your overflow to flow more water than the pump can get into your tank otherwise your tank overflows.

Well my sump will be a wet dry tomorrow!!!!! it has been running as a sump for 2 days now buti took it down tonight to make it a wet dry.

I will make anew thread with pix tomorrow but do i need bio balls or can i use pot scrubbies in there place? bio balls are to much money.

Scrubbies work great. A lot of us use those.
