Big box you dump dirty water in and clean water comes out.

Best bet for a bio filter.

Run a search for sumps on this site, there are a few different styles, but mechanically they are the same.

submergable pump?i thik that is what it means
:duh:
a sump is a filter that has mechanical, lots of bio, and maybe chemical filtration. best thing out there for large tanks.

A "sump" is simply a low area that receives drainage. Look it up in the dictionary. Used in the aquarium context, it signifies the below-tank chamber into which water from your tank drains and is returned via one or more pumps. Typically sumps are used for wet/dry filters, but can also be used as refugia for inverts or plants.

BTW, you should be asking questions instead of answering them. Don't make stuff up because other people read it and think it's true. :(

:iagree:

No guessing...
the sump is the 'bucket' (so-to-speak) that is normally the last stage of the w/d filter system, however many people put a FSB, canister, UV or other devices after the sump.

SUMP
Function: noun
1 : a pit or reservoir serving as a drain or receptacle for liquids: as a pit at the lowest point in a circulating or drainage system

Sump Pump
Function: noun
: a pump (as in a basement) to remove accumulations of liquid (as water) from a sump pit

Right on...

Its always good to see them in person so you can understand the complete process.

There should be one at your LFS.

I agree with steve. They are intimidating untill you find out how simple they really are.
They just LOOK complicated:grinyes:
