I see that everyone here obviously prefers building their own sumps. I have a question though: I have never built anything like that and I dont know if I trust myself to build one that wont leak. I will go for it if its that much better, but whats wrong with the megaflow sumps? They seem to be pretty large, have a good size area for bioballs, you can put in your own mechanical media, room for heaters and whatever else, etc. So why should I build my own instead of buying a megaflow? Besides money I guess, because theyre more expensive, but is that the only difference if I was going to build a comporable size sump myself?

I have seen a diy wet/dry where they used a large tank could also be a large plastic container and they used a plastic 3 draw setup wich sat inside the tank, the top of the draw holder had a hole for the water from the tank the top draw had holes drilled in it and held filter wool ect the 2nd draw drilled the same and held the bio-media and the 3rd draw was removed and the return pump placed at other end and the heater in the middle. It is cheep to setup and looks like it dose a very good job and to clean out just pull draw out and service.

Mostly because of $$$$. It is typically cheaper to build your own. There is a lot of info in the DIY section.

I like making my own because I can make it to fit my application. I don't like to plan my tank around the filter. I'll plan my filter around the tank.

Yes..... DIY versions can be made to be much more effective.

Alright thanks, I think Im going to try a DIY when I get my next tank (planning on getting a 96x30x30 in about a year and a half I hope) despite my innitial hesitance. Ill be sure to look around this site for suggestions and sure to ask lots of questions also. Thanks guys.

you should definately give it a try, there are several excellent threads in here on sump building, plus i very rewarding making things that actually work with your own hands
