Wut is the point of sumps for larger tanks (saltwater)?
 
Aside from added filtration, it is a place to hide equipment (heaters etc.) and can also increase total water volume. The more water the less likely there will be drastic water changes. i.e. tempature, pH, nitrate level, etc. (your 30gal can have 40gal in total volume for the system) =more stable tank.
 
The biggest thing is filtration. Sumps are capable of holding a LOT more media then a canaster, HOB, or UG filter. Also as said before your adding more water to your tank so the parameters don't flux as much.
 
I agree with the comments above. the filtration capabilities are far better. You can have more bio and mecanical filtration, not to mention how easy they are to maintain .
 
The only downfall I see with them is they hold water..... and you know how hard it is for us to keep fish out of it if it holds water.
