Ok i have read up on the diy filtrations and medias. Now my question is in most sumps i have seen there is not charcoal. Is it not needed when you have a screen, sponge to filter, then bio ball/scrubbies for BB

My Fluval has charcoal and a filter pad and the bio tube things.

It seems that most people use a sump guessing its better for water quaility?

Making plans for a tank in basement wife as given me the ok:naughty::naughty::naughty:

charcoal should be used to remove meds....

^^this and i believe quite a few go for a sump due to ease of maintenance as well as increased media capacity. im moving to a sump for easy maintenance.

I agree. Charcoal should be used to remove chemicals and medications from the water.

At that rate why do they give you charcoal in the fluval cannister systems. They claim it helps remove amonia

Your probably thinking of the fluval chemical media that removes ammonia. They might even sell a half and half combo half carbon half ammonia remover half activated carbon. Two totally different products really.
