Ive seen people posting lately about sun catfish getting up to 18", I was thinking about these guys a lot lately and our LFS has a ton of them for 6 bucks each and less than 2.5". How fast do these guys grow? I understand theyre pretty shy when small and gain confidence with size, whats a pretty standard growth rate?

They are great cats IMO. The biggest I have seen was 15" TL (with tail). Reported here on MFK by FASTLANE. I don't believe they will grow to 18" SL (w/o caudal fin; ~21" with) in captivity because 12" is the max I see everywhere (properly housed and cared for); that 15" is the only example.

Get a school of at least 6-10. You won't regret it. They are incomparably more bold and fun in a nice size group.

Growth rate varies. Give or take, from ~3" TL to 6", 10", 12" TL, my slowest took ~2, ~4, ~6 years; the fastest - ~1, ~2, ~3 years respectively. For the last 3+ years they have been in a 1500 gal pond.
