The manual isn't very clear about what should be in each tray in the canister. the model is 304B. I have Blue and white filter pads and then have Matrix for the bio. Does the water go from top to bottom or is it pushed up from the bottom.

tank water goes down uv tube opening to the bottom and then up through the individual trays. So, the bottom tray is where you want the filter pads. For my set-up, I use the blue filter pad and add Poly-Fil(pillow stuffing) for the bottom tray, and the other 3 trays I have ceramic media.
xraycer is correct about water flow. In mine I use the blue pad and white of on bottom. Next 2 trays I use ceramic rings and balls. Top tray is just a polishing pad.
