I have a 120 wide with a modified pond filter for filtration (3 gallons of bio). It has ancients in it now and I have no problems keeping parameters in check at 600gph, twin 1 inch down flows and a 3/4 inch return. I am thinking of adding a kelberi to this tank. It also has 100gal deepwater air pump as well.
I am looking at upgrading to a 1000gph pump.
I have another 120 (5 foot) I keep various cichlids in, this tank has a cascade canister filter, aquaclear 110 and haydor koralia 700 gph powerhead and 60gal air pump.
I need some more circulation in my cichlid tank above, and I was going to get a 3200gph sunsun powerhead to add movement. My parameters are fine but I want to get the poop off the bottom.
What does everyone think of using the fr600 as a powerhead? The wattage is the same as the sunsun and I plan to run the pump for 12 hours a day (power consumption is important). I don't know how they rate the vibration powerheads and they do cause broad water movement but when it comes to blowing a bottom clean old fashion powerheads seem to work better for me.
I would most likely mount the pump outside the tank and use a directional return for the mount. I know priming it could be a challenge but I will use my quick water change feed as the pick up.
This also lets me boast up the flow on the other tank to 1000gph and I will have the fr600 to fall back on if that pump fails. As of present I have no other filtration on the 120wide and I could use the extra security
