I was in getting some feeders for my south american pikes, and noticed what looked like a pumpkin seed bream in petcos display tank. I asked the guy working about it and he quickly said oh we can't sell it, its a native fish. Then he explained it came in with the feeders "to eat the dead feeders" I asked what they were going to do with it and he said he didn't know it was just going to live in the community show tank. What gives? Anyone have any incite? I live in Virginia is it illegal for them to sell it? Why would a farm put them in for eating dead feeders lol...I feel like maybe it was a contaminate in a pond or something that is outside

All feeder fish/shrimp raised in the ponds outside along with some odd natives/exotic fishes. My guess the sunfish at Petco was probably a Green sunfish which is much common species that show up in feeder tanks.

Tilapia, gambusia, least killifish, bluefins, green sunfish, seminole killifish and some random shiners often ended up in the feeder fish/shrimp shipments. Most of them are usually give away for free.

u cant buy it as a sunfish but you can buy it as a feeder lol but im dead serius i had some green sunfish from some feedertanks and i asked for it they said no its native so i came in when someone else was there and said hey can i get those feeders the wierd looking ones and they bagged them up. but yea i have ran into. green sunfish, crayfish, channel cats, madtoms, once a trout but i couldnt keep it alive and many many gambosa

That is how I got the sunfish that I have now. They were in the feeder tank. My lfs gave them to me though.
