Do Green Sunfish do better with a high protein diet or a veggie diet? Im getting some sunfish and buying more food but dont know what would be better for my fish. And what types of food to bring out a natives colors?

Power Bait!!!!

Naw...worms, shrimp, pellets, flakes, etc....thats what i feed mine.

what about a high protein diet? will that increase their size or it wont really matter

thank you and i have one other question. What is more aggressive a pure green sunfish or a green sunfish and pumpkinseed hybrid? Because someone said a hybrid between those 2 species is 3x more aggressive than a pure green sunfish. Is this true?

Fishkeeper1, sunfish in general do best with a diet that closely resembles their natural diet, such as insects, crayfish, smaller fish, and so on. This is a higher protein diet, but small amounts of vegetation will benefit your fish as well. You'll find a good balance in a quality cichlid pellet food. If you prefer frozen or live, it's best to offer a good variety of everything, but emphasizing more on the protein.

Greens, like all sunfish (including hybrids) look best around their breeding times. They won't be as colorful as they are during these times no matter what you feed them. Also, given a good diet, good feeding regimen, and proper tank space, you should see them reach their maximum size within a few years, which is healthy. Powerfeeding to hurry this process creates unhealthy fish.

There isn't a whole lot of knowledge on the temperament of the hybrids of these fish, but from what I've experienced they aren't any more aggressive than greens or pumpkinseeds. It also depends on the particular fish, I think. I've had plenty of pumpkinseeds that give greens the shaft, when it's normally greens the rule tanks.

Hope this helps.

thanks just making sure because all those muscle builders and those people eat alot of protein and was hoping my fish would be ripped like them :headbang2 Also some guy on yahoo answers said that the hybrid of those 2 species was really aggressive

i didnt know power bait was edible?
I don't know if it's edible....never tried it. But, I catch a lot of blue gills with power bait.

I high protin diet for blue gill can be good, but just keep it simple. Shrimp, worms ( good protine), But feed a very of food. For faster growth...Just feed 3 times a day as much as they can eat.

yea im going over to petsmart, picking out like 5 kinds of foods, buying crickets for breeding them and feeding them to my fish and gecko, then goign around the yard to collect worms, ants, ect...
