I was wondering if any of the fish gurus out there could help me get a solid id for this sunfish which i think is an Orange spotted sunfish

I think you original assertion of Orange spotted Sunfish is correct. Excellent find, and very nice looking fish.

I agree

thank you, i thought it was but wasn't exactly sure since it was the first one i have came across in my area

Just adding one more confirmation for O-spot.
What type of area did you find this guy? His proportions make him look kind of emaciated. Beautiful fish though - congrats.

i found him in a pond that got flooded out like 2 years ago and i have only caught little channel cats out of it until i caught this guy, he is pretty skinny, he was out in a pond with my long ears and he couldn't eat enough so i brought him inside to grow him out as much as possible

Definitely in the O-Spots range and if that pond flooded from a river of creek that runs to a river not out of the question that it got there that way, the O-Spot is known to inhabit the backwaters of lots of river systems in its known area.
