I've decided to go tropical. If anyone that is willing to go to Sterling VA to pick up some sunfish, you can have them.
There are 5 of them that I caught with my minnow trap last summer. They are 1.5 - 2" right now.

I will take pictures and post later.

Since they are wild and natives, why don't you just release them where you caught them?

He just caught them this past summer and from the post it sounds like that they were the only stock in the tank. I get that there's a slim chance of introducing or releasing something bad, but this basically can happen every single day. This could happen from humans also, but I don't see this stopping people from swimming, boating or fishing in water ways because it has fish habitats.

Wouldn't all the aquarium water people use on there lawns and gardens that live close to bodies of water be at risk of having aquarium water with these "diseases" enter the water?

The problem is that that release them at this time of year will be lethal. The cold temperatures will kill them.

Along with the chemicals and fertilizers....but yes there is a risk to spreading the diseases around. But in my opinion, they are more likely dumping their aquarium water in the drain of the sink than out in the garden.

Good point. Never really thought about this. I just figured why you couldn't just acclimate like you do with any pet fish going into a new tank, but I suppose going from warmer to much colder may present an issue. Since the OP is from further south in Va, it may be doable with warmer water temps idk

Also he do not say that the sunfish is only the stock in that aquarium as there may be other inhabitants that he do not mentioned.
