Everything i have ever read says avoid sunlight and natural light. Has anyone here used sunlight or natural light for plant growth? Just seem like it can be controlled with shades and used along with artificial light. sustainability

You can grow plants in aquariums underneath a skylight as long as tank is not exposed to direct sunlight. Too much direct sunlight causes too much algae growth.

My molly tank uses a combo of sunlight and artificial light. Its located about 8 feet from the window and gets about three hours of morning sun then its artificial lights for the other time. There is algae but the mollies keep it cleaned up very nicely.

This guy only uses sunlight and he has a breathtaking planted

Using sunlight for planted tanks will not necessarily create algae problems. I think the sunlight = algae issue is for aquarium keepers that do not have aquarium plants. As long as your tank is planted heavy enough the plants will outcompete the algae for nutrients and prevent algae blooms.

amazing, is he the king of his country?

Dunno but he is a a guy who really likes his fish :grinno:

"There was a problem when we were asked to add 40 small Tinfoil barbs. They ended up growing to 20cm/8” long and eating nearly all the plants. We had to fish them out and replace the plants! The fish then became a BBQ meal for the housekeeper and his friends."

Would have loved to see some Altums/Discus with some rummy noses or cardinals in there.

But as you can see this guy's plants are lookin great with just the sun and acording to Roland Seah ,the guy who built it, it has never had any alge problems.
