Are these complete garbage, or decent filters if well maintained? I'm a little burned out on Chinese garbage, but the sunsun 304 filter seems like a good budget canister.

I've heard quite a few people have good luck with them. Me personally, I'd look to try to cut costs in other areas before trying to cut cost on the life support of my system. But that's just me.

I have a huge sump bio filter, and in the process of creating a multi plant refugium. The canister will just be for GAC and other media. I liked the idea of having a built in 9 watt UV sterilizer, but I've read it deteriorates the cheap plastic. Maybe I'll go with just the canister filter with a separate inline UV.

Refugiums are cool but don't expect much unless it's huge...like bigger than the tank. I've played with them in the past and found them more work than reward.

I have a SunSun 304B. It has been great for me for about six months now. The only downside I can think is that the flow rate is significantly reduced once you have it filled with media. My 304B is rated at 375gph but after filling it with media I think I am probably closer to 220-250gph. I do use the spraybar though, so that probably reduces it some too.

I have an unboxing thread for my 304B that I posted a little while back if you want to check it out. If I can find it I'll post a link.

One last thing, I am pretty sure the UV tube for my filter is glass instead of the cheap plastic everybody refers to.

I have 2, the larger one with the built in UV developed a leak around the quartz sleeve which resulted in water wrecking the lamp socket. I ended up removing the UV fixture and sealing the wiring holes. Runs great, easy to clean, quiet. I use their coarse sponge pads and bio media in mine. That canister now outputs into a Jebao UV sterilizer before returning to the tank.

I have 2 sunsun 304b and it's been running for 2yrs now. Great filter for the price. Does the same job as my Rena xp3 at a cheap price. My uv tube is glass. I leave it on 24/7. I don't fill my trays to max capacity so my flow rate is still good. Would I buy another one? Definitely!!
