So Cal
After removing him from his main tank for my newly acquired dovii, this mean red devil showed no mercy in attacking me within minutes of being placed in a temporary tank w/ ac70.

Thought id share how bright orange/red he is w/ no editing, and how quickly mad he was at me for downgrading him until he gets his home back.

Anyone care to guess where I initially acquired him from @ about 1"? Fed only NLS flakes

Petsmart or lfs bro. And I love that color on him. Yellow devil over orange red devil any day

There's no way this is petsmart, beautiful specimen.

Endo, every one of your fish drops my jaw. You have some best looking cichlids on this site.

What's the trick? ;) A water change every other day? :P

I truly appreciate your kind words.
Only one petsmart in SoCal that I know of rarely carries Red Devils, in fact they took the sign down so I guess they no longer do.

I went in on the shipment day to ensure I get one as they usually have healthy fish w/ no deformities or signs of parasites, as some LFS do from lack of proper care.
A few months later and use of NLS he developed into a bright and mean fish!

I wouldn't say there is a trick haha, I spend time observing fish with the most potential/most interactive before I purchase them. I also ensure the best possible filtration in my tanks w/ a lot of bio media for BB and as you mentioned lots of water changes.

I do go a step further or some may consider it overboard and add liquid Pro-biotics to the tank as a disease-prevention and help digestion of foods for some of the cichlids that have weaker digestive and immune systems such as the beani.

It mainly does come down to the genetics of the fish but It doesn't hurt to feed natural foods (w/ no fillers) or to add healthy bacteria to the tank as they would have in their natural habitat; it can only help ;)

Usually the more yellow ones I have seen have a dull yellow which I don't care much for, but that thing is nice looking!
