ive got really hard water like between 150-300 ppm and would that be ok for ca/sa cichlids and if not what product should i use to soften the water?

Peat moss?

How about a water softener for the whole house? That hard water has got to be killer on your pipes, shower, toilet, washing machine and etc. also.

The last thing you want to do is mess with your water parameters. Just provide your fish with clean and healthy water and they will adapt. I have raised several types before with very hard water with no problem.

50/50 mix of RO and tap water should help!

But I prefer THIS.

I've kept cichlids in a variety of places most all very very hard water.
Had jewels and convicts breed at the same time, without trying, in my arowana tank.
I was shocked.

Yeah, it's not that big of a deal to have hard water. One benefit of hard water (kH), is that it helps to buffer the water keeping pH more stable and increases alkalinity. This, in turn, decreases the toxicity of ammonia and nitrites.

Aquariums with a low kH will require more attention to water changes to control the nitrate level reducing the tendency for the pH to drop.

Many hobbyists get a little too worked up about hard water. It's not that bad, as long as your gH doesn't get out of control.
