My g/f just got a used xp3 from the lfs and I cleaned it really well (was saltwater) and started it up. It makes a lot of motor noise that can be heard clear across the room with the cabinet doors closed (over my air pump and other 2 XP3's). I replaced the impeller with ones from my other xp3 and it still makes noise.

I think this is an older model xp3 because the impeller cap is different than my new ones. The new ones have two rubber pieces on both ends of the metal rod going through the impellers and the used one doesn't, it just has one. I tried to screw the new impeller cap onto the used xp3 but it doesn't fit, it's too small.

Any ideas how to quiet this down? She paid $50 for it so I don't want to spend another $50 to get it quiet.

Two threads won't make anyone answer faster. :D

Since you changed the impeller with one that was known to be good, the impeller housing is likely worn from being on a tank with sand. The best thing you can do is take it back and put the money toward a new one. This one has been beat up too much.

You responded didn't you :)

Anyway, I'm going to try a few other things. It seems to have become a little quieter to the point I don't really notice it.

CHOMPERS probably has it right, but just curious...What kind of 'motor noise' grinding / squealing / rubbing / ticking / humming?

Did the sound change when you exchanges impellers? (did you try the old one in a good xp3?

And is it pushing water out like it should?

A little more like a loud humming sound. It didn't change when I changed impellers and it's pushing water just fine.

I didn't switch the impellers back and the old one is still in the good xp3.

Sounds like the impeller cavity is very worn or the ciol was over-heated and is warped. Either way we fall back on CHOMPERS advice.

There's a sucker born every minute and I took the bait :nilly:

So what did you do to improve it? I am sure a lot of people will want to know.
