I had a very funny experience yesterday. I have 12 red KKP that are very healthy and their colour changes depending on mood and lighting (if i keep the light on for too long they fade).

Water params are fine and I bought 2 new pieces of driftwood. It realeased some tannins (as expected) and the tank is now has a little greenish/brownish tinge......but the KKP have all now turned completely red(like a tomato red).....much redder than i have ever seen them...its has been like this for he last 3 days (have not changed water) and water params are fine and fish all look extremely happy.

anyone had this happen before? maybe there is something in tannins to make our fish more comfortable etc??? or is the tannins reducing the amount of overall light to the tank?

i am not complaining with the result....but it is so bizzarre!:grinno:

thats crazy but cool kinda

It is the discoloration of the water that is resulting in the parrots looking more red. Tannins from wood or from bottles (blackwater extract), tend to have this effect on both red and yellow colored fish, while drowning out greens and blues.

it is not just due to the discoloration of the water coz the actual fish are now all completely red.....even in places that were not as red as before....

good idea about taking them out to a clearer water......it was just as red when i tried it after your suggestion.

here are the pictures
the first 2 is just straight after i put the driftwood in....so they are a little red but nothing special
next two pics are after the water turned darker and the kkp parrots all changed to very red...much redder than they have ever been

Nice!

man i would get some natural substrate or some play sand and natural gravel at the same time and that tank would be bangin nice kkp they are red devil and blood parrot right??

i find it easier to clean a bare bottom tank :D but certainly agree with your idea of substrate

i bought them a KKP ....not sure what sorta cross they are to be honest
