Woke up noticed what I thought where scratches in my 220G. So I went to look at it only ti find they where cracks spidering. about 7 of them like your car window when it gets hit with rocks. they where all very tinny the size of the head of a nail. I knew the tank was a goner and I almost cried I had wanted this tank for so long.

The only good news is I had enough other tanks empty that I could move the fish. I have 2 balls and my oscar each around 7 or 8" in a 55 gallon, I have my Texas and My JD in my 55 gallon sump; and I have the two jewels the firemouth and rainbow shark in my 29G Biocube.

I moved the canister to the 55g with the sharks and the O. I put half the lava rocks in the biocube, and then the rest I used to build a make shift intank RUGF for the other 55 gallon.

The what makes me scratch my head is how did this happen? the spider cracks are one the out side of the tank. My wife said nothing happend to the tank, the only two things I could think of is that its been really really cold in the room, so we started using a space heater in there. Or that the tank was not level enough and caused stress fractures, although I thought that would have been at the seams and not the center of the front panel.

Not sure what I am going to do in the long run, I know that tank is trash now, So I am just going to pray and hope I can find some deal on a tank for at least my sharks and my oscar. I think the rest would be okay where they are at. If I could move the fish that are in the biocube to the 55.

Its acrylic so I am pretty sure that the bonds can not be broken and re bonded. The freaking texas just beat the curde out of my jd. I put up a make shift separator; about to go play golf and try to take my mind off of all the fish drama.

Are you going to just throw it away? There's alot of people out there who will still buy this for a snake or other reptile or a vivarium. Just saying....you could get some money out of this to purchase a new tank.

Well that's good to hear. :grinno:

is it just on one panel? it might not look perfect but u could seal a piece of acrylic over it

Darn that really sucks. I think this is all of our worst nightmares. But hey you always have to tell your self it could be worst. you could have woke up and all of your fish could have been dean in a dry tank and 220 gallons of water on the floor. So keep you head up!

As far as how it happen, I dont really have a clue. U are right about the tank being unlevel it would have split at the seems. Also I have never seen acrylic spider crack like that and it is a lot more flexible than glass. So I would think if it was pressure than It would have showed signs of bowing before it cracked. Also, I would think that the bonds would be weaker than the middle of the sheet of acrylic, there for the bonds would fail before the sheet did. I also Dont think that the temperature change form the space heater would have done it. I just don't think that acrylic has these property's to crack under extreme temperature change. only glass does. and not to mention even if it was glass it would have to heat and cool really quick. Even if it was glass and the space heater raised the temp in the room 20 degrees over 10 minutes. It wouldn't have that much effect on the tank I would think. Because the water is going to take a while to make that same temp change. The bigger body of water the longer it takes to heat. so therefor it would have takes hours for the tank to raise in temp like that and it would have been slow enough not to affect the acrylic like that.

So thats my 2 cents. It really seems like to me that something hit the tank. and once again I have never know acrylic to spider crack like that. Im not at all saying that you dont know what your tank is but this just sound like glass from what it did.

Now, I have heard of acrylic being repaired. and its alot easier than glass from what I have heard. you will just have to remove that panel of acrylic sand down the edges really good to get all the old bonding agent off and put u a new panel on and bond it back, Main thing is that the bond has a clean surface to stick too.

That is of course it is a molded acrylic tank and it is seamless.

Anyway, The best of luck to you and I am sorry to hear this happened. It really does suck.

But, To help use maybe fig our how it broke pictures would be helpful.

GOODLUCK!
