LFS guy cutting up huge pieces of Japan mat for making a big shower/trickle filter, maybe for a koi pond. Anyone use this in their sump or trickle filters?

I use it. It's great stuff. Comes in different grades as well from coarse to fine. Keeps its shape and dosen't degrade over time. And because you can cut it down you can make it fit any filter you care to make.

I've been using Matala mats for about 5-6 years now and they are great. I've got a bunch rolled in my gravity-fed Koi pond and it works well. I also use it in my canister filters, sumps, and HOB's and it works well there too. The biggest thing that I like about it that you can cut it down into smaller pieces if you need to put it in a smaller filter or something.
