On Wednesday I have the pleasure of picking up a sturgeon catfish. I am told they are rather rare and very hard to get. The supplier has only gotten three in his entire life and I am getting one of them!

That being said, I know how big they get but does anyone know anything more about them?

I'm pretty sure they are illegal in Oregon. But they are a cold-water fish. And as they grow they appreciate brackish water.

It's not actual sturgeon, it is a catfish that looks like a sturgeon, only grows to 18 inches. From what little I could find, it is from the amazon, so not a cold water fish. Scientific name is Platystomatichthys sturio. And it isn't illegal here, my LFS is very thorough about not selling illegal fish as are all the suppliers (which are in Portland).

Oh okay, scientific name helps. Sorry, I know a lot more about actual sturgeon.

Usually, keepers have trouble feeding them. Very unfortunately, they will often refuse any foods but live... but goldfish is a bad diet for them, too fatty, not to mention the whole transferred-illness-risk thing. A guppy or a cichlid or other lean feeder would be a better diet, perhaps a live shrimp or a worm.

I could never break mine - he chose to die than to eat ANYTHING non-live.

Yes, they have been reported by some to be sensitive and not easy to transfer and acclimate.
