SuperMoon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The moon always looks nice :)

[note: super moons do not increase tides, they will not cause a higher temperature, there are no global weather related effects attached to a super moon, this is just like the equinox but with a much smaller mass, the moon, in mind.]

Tides actually will be slightly higher by about an inch.

from the link above:
"this month's perigee will put the Moon about 8% closer to Earth than usual and about 2% closer to Earth than the average lunar perigee"...."According to NASA and NOAA, a perigee Moon brings with it extra-high "perigean tides" but this is nothing to worry about. In most places, lunar gravity at perigee pulls tide waters only a few centimeters (an inch or so) higher than usual. Local geography can amplify the effect to about six inches. "

On a more serious note, here in New York it is noticeably larger to the eye. It is relatively cloudless tonight and my girlfriend pointed it out without even knowing there was anything different tonight (I then got to look smart by dropping some Super Moon knowledge on her).

Nothing spectacular really. I don't know what the fuzz was about. All I know is that when the full moon and the perigee occurs on the same day/night the shrimp run on Biscayne Bay is excellent......and it did not disappoint.

I watched the Moon rise and fall....all the time dip netting and catching shrimp and did not see anything spectacular about the size of the moon.....looked the same to me from start to finish;)
