Ok, I just bought some of this black sand for my tank. I am in the process of rinsing it. I was just wondering will the water ever turn clear...or will it continue to turn black. Any idea of how long i should rinse it for? I have never used sand before... Any help would be appreciated :D Thanks guys!
 
I bought 100lbs of Tahitian Black sand and I rinsed it is small quantities in a 5 gallon bucket...swirll it around with a stick while you run water through it... took me all day to do 100 lbs...rinse till it's clear or you'll hate your tank...
 
Ugh. Well luckily I'm not doing 100 lbs...lol I am rinsing 20 lbs at at time. So I should just let the water over flow out of the bucket till it runs clear?

do it at about 5 lbs per rinse...like I said put the hose in the bucket and stir till clear...
 
Pretty much. Rinse and stir till your eyes are bleeding and you can't tell if the water is clear or not, then continue to rinse some more. It's worth it in the end, even if you start to doubt your substrate choice while cleaning it. :D
 
Come on then.. lets get some pics of this shiny black sand!
 
it took forever to wash out 20 lbs of tahitian moon sand. We just rinsed until it was clear, probably 30 min total.

the last time I did something other than put a fluffed pillow in a pillow case
