I firmly believe that Manufacturers, Wholesalers and Retailers are in collusion to gouge the average Fishkeeper! They monopolize their products and arbitarily set market prices for their merchandize.
I find the raw cost of materials used in production of these filters, replacement cartridges, specialized additives and formulated foods not commensurate with the final purchasing price. Is plexiglass so expensive that a simple overflow box can cost over $50? Is a piece of replacement foam worth $6?, when a whole bag of kitchen sponges is less than $3?
When I compare, the same product availiable in third world countries, I am outraged. Why should I have to pay more just because they feel I can afford it?
When I buy supplies now, for my aquarium needs, I buy POND stuff. Its is cheaper, it is the same stuff!
Countries like China can take a product and reverse engineer it and produce it for a fraction of the cost!
How then does a manufacturer justify its high prices?
Screw them. I won't pay!
What do you MFK'ers do to keep you running costs low? Do you substitute things? Or do you go without?
