Just bought a 300 Gallon fish tank. The Dimensions are (LWH)8ftx2ftx2.5ft. The glass is 1 1/2 cm thick. The Tank seems very solid, but looking at other tanks this size, they have center support glass on the top. This one does not. It is just four walls and a bottom. I'm going to fill it up in my garage and see how it does, but wondering if this is fine before I do? Thanks for the help. Oh another thing, The plastic frame around it is taken off but I have all the pieces, I was going to put them back on but I'm planning on making my own stand and it would cover the bottom anyways, so is the frame necessary? Looks like just decoration to me...Thanks for the help again guys!

If there is not center support on top, the chances are that it will crack/break. I would suggest building some sort of support before you do a water test.

How would I go about putting one there? Anyone done this before? any ideas? It came from the manufacturer like this, I dont see where there used to be any support brace there....

Do I need the plastic framing? Anyone have experience manufacturing tanks this size?

As i've seen on some larger glass tanks, epoxy some glass strips aroung the tops of the corners and one or two center supports. a local dr. is getting rid of a large tank in his office for that vary reason.

I would do the same epoxy some heavy glass strips along the top going front to back get like 3" strips maybe 1/2" thick.

Is the plastic frame a heavy quality or is it really thin cheap crap?
if its heavy chances are it was made heavy for a reason, to serve the purpose of bracing

It's cheap plastic... GE silicone work for attaching the glass, who can you buy glass from?

Where do you buy glass from? Lowes?

Lowes would probably have it if not just look up a glass store in your town they can cut it for you It should be cheap becuase you don't need much they might even have scrap cut offs they might give you

The silicone would hold for awhile, but I wouldn't have peace of mind doing it. Personally I would go to your local plastics company and get a top edge wrap with center brace made. They should be able to take an "L" piece of acrylic and do a continuous bend that will cover the top edge of your tank with a center brace in the middle. What you would essentially be doing is making the top plastic piece that is on any glass tank 55 gallons and higher in a store. Check around, and if you got it made out of 3/8" acrylic it should cost too much (relatively speaking).
