I bought a combo for 40 pound catfish at dicks. It is a spinning rod and reel, I don't know what either models are. It is a 7 foot rod and I can chuck bait around 50 yards with it, the more wieght I have thae farther I can throw. Since the reel is made to handle 40 pound cats it is obvious that it can handle big fish. It doesn't have the smoothest retreive compared to the top quality reels, but it lets drag out pretty well. I'm going to be surf casting a lot on my vacation to florida. This is going to be a week. Would this be fine for surf fishing? There's a small possibility that I could hook a tarpon. THe reel can hold 200 yards of 20 lb mono, which is what it came with. I was thinking of getting some power pro 40 lb braid on it with a 90 lb mono shock leader. Should I just use mono because I've heard braid hurts spinning reels. I was thinking about buying a better reel to hold more line. The rod, reel, and 150 yards of 20 lb mono cost 45$ And I know I should have a 9-10 foot rod but I'm using this rod because I'll be on amelia island for only a week

if you hook in to a big tarpon with 200 yards of line you're most likely pretty much gonna be SOL, but hopefully it will run towards the beach lol

haha mhmmmmmm^ okay it's a ready2fish, it was my first spinning rod ever, being an only fly fisherman, pretty sure these things suck. The reel could probably hold 400 yd of 40 lb powerpro braid, I'll probably go lower because it would be pretty expensive to buy that.

Ive seen tarpon empty penn 706s 200 yards aint going to cut it. Also trying to hook up a tarpon while difficult also. You might run into some jacks though.

I was thinking jacks more, maybe some red and black drums, the chances of a tarpon are there, very small, but if i hook one in a week of fishing a lot of the day, then i better end up with it in my hands

So whats the plan surf or pier?

Ok then when on the pier look what the locals are doing first, and don't just go straight to the end and put out a bottom rig. More then likely they will help you out.
