Okay, I have a 315G tank filtered by a sump that is around 100G. The sump is fead by 2 overflow boxes that turn the tank over about 6 times per hour. With all of the water flowing through the sump/wetdry, do I need the return spraybars to aggitate the water surface or do I have sufficent gas exchange taking place within the sump? I really prefer the return lines spraying deeper in the tank.

Have you checked oxygen levels in your tank ?
That would be the real test.

running your return lines deep in the thank can cause the sump to overflow if there would be a power failure.

The returns lines are not running deep in the tank. I have 2 spray bars that are just below the surface and they are pointed down into the tank instead of at the surface. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that. How do you check the oxygen levels...I assume a test kit. Sticking my head underwater didn't work!

It may not have worked but I would have loved to see the fishies reactions.

Chompers got me going on this subject when I developed my first closed loop system and was playing with spraybar designs.

I would piont the spraybars down to mix up the bottom, so to speak.
Just curious, what kind of overflow boxes do you have?

Built the overflow boxes myself out of plywood and liquid rubber. When I didnt like the way the bulkheads were working I looked at purchasing some boxes but there was nothing out there that would move the water I wanted to move that didnt cost an arm and a leg. I measured the area I had to work with between the bracing of the tank and build boxes to fit between those braces.
