First of all, I want to say this is NOT a "which fish is most aggressive" thread, whether pound for pound or outright. I purely want to know, if you had a massive tank, and put all the different types of freshwater monster fish in the world in it, which Top 10 fish have the BEST chance at being the last one standing? Aggression comes into it, but is only a small factor. Pointless having psychotic cichlids trying to bite into armoured giants with their tiny teeth.
So this challenge takes into account natural weapons and defenses (size, weight, teeth, spines, heavily armoured scales, super fast agility, hunting/fighting ability, etc). Only one healthy fully grown adult of each fish in the aquarium (no school of piranhas!). Have to be fish that live at least at large part of their lives in freshwater, so no bull sharks. I've taken the liberty of grouping some catfish from the same order in the interests of variety. Sizes quoted are average of what I could find on net. Here's my top 10. Happy to correct any wrong stats.
1. Sturgeon eg,. Kaluga, Beluga, white
- biblical size eg., 20' and 2000 lbs
- armoured scutes
- not aggressive but none of the other fish would be able to do anything to them
- they will not only survive the other fish, they are one of the few organisms which are functionally immortal (never die of old age)
2. Giant freshwater stingray
- massive size 15', 1000 lbs
- 15" barbed, poisonous stinger
- can burrow in substrate to defend itself, and also many predators's jaw orientation make it difficult for them to bite something on the substrate
3. Freshwater sawfish (euryhaline)
- massive size 20', 400 lbs
- massive saw weapon
4. Electric eel
- can stun and repel crocodilians with 700 volt shocks
- massive length 8', 40 lbs
5. Alligator gar
- massive teeth and jaws
- massive size 6', 100 lbs
- tough scales
6. Arapaima
- massive size 9', 300 lbs
- armoured scales
- weak offensive teeth/weapons, apart from just brute force and jumping
7. Giant catfish (Wels, Goonch, Piraiba)
- 7-13'
- 200-400 lbs
8. Goliath african tiger fish
- massive teeth
- highly aggressive
- big size 5', 30 lbs
9. Giant snakehead
- highly aggressive
- big size 4', 40 lbs
10. Armatus (vampire tetra)
- those fangs!!
- 2-3', 20 lbs
Would love to see your top 10s.
