Good morning from BC, Canada. Every time I go to Vancouver I have to bring back a few fish from shops that carry thing I cannot buy in my home town 4 hours away. Out of 3 fish I seem to average only one survivor. My tanks are all established (running for 8 months to years) but 2 of the three fish I purchased yesterday are almost on their way to the big tank in the sky. Is this common for others to lose fish like this. Two $40 fish are not looking like they are going to make it after not even 24 hours. The only thing I can think of is that other fish harrass them and they can't settle in. I float them when I get home for about and hour while adding in a bit of my tank water. I know that tons of you order fish online and what not. Do you have as much trouble keeping them alive as I do? Local fish I buy do much better. I hate losing fish!!!!!

I think waiting an hour to put them in the tank is a little too long. I think it should be around a half a hour. That might be what is causing the stress in the fish maybe not but thats how I do it and I rarely lose fish.

Okay first of all you said, "harassing" then seperate the new fishes, let them have their own space (divider or something) if its worth $40 to ya.

Also I don't think you did anything wrong, how does the fish look at the store? Sick, slow, or happy to see you? I get fish shipped to me and I cut the bag open and throw it in my tank, I dont even gently place the fish in, I just dump it in....A OK.

So here it is: Let your new fishes be safe on their own.

Can you rearrange the tank next time you introduce some new fish? It works for me.

Good call. I thought the 2 little green terrors in the tank wouldn't be a problem but perhaps they were. I had a smaller tank with only a catfish growing in it that may have been the better choice. Live and learn. My Heckelli has been now put into that smaller tank and actually seem to be recovering. Fingers crossed. Any more thoughts?

It can get quite cold on the car deck while crossing the strait even in summer. Maybe your fish got chilled?
Do you have any problems with locally bought fish surviving?

Edit:

Keep your fish in either a rubbermaid or a hospital tank to let them settle in from the car ride home.
