Suspending driftwood

Maybe 2ish feet long but less wide than that.

I got some fishing line. I'll play with it this weekend. Might run to harbor freight too.

That video above is pretty cool - he uses thick pieces with an open top tank. I wonder if I could use a thin piece of something that would span the tank and not affect the cover somehow....

Try eggcrate. It won't hold much weight if your tank is wide, but the water will support the weight of some of the wood anyway.
 
I would just use fishing line and tie it to the braces, if your tank has braces? That way if you need to take lids off for maintenance you don't have to struggle with that

Where do you get that? Craft store? Hardware store?
You can get it from a hardware store. It's called light diffuser. like everyone else said, if you have braces, don't bother with it.

I used one of those quick release suction cups
Cut of most of the hook part, drilled a hole through the wood and then used a zip tie to fix the wood to the suction cup.
Works.
