My Sveni was ID'd as a male by MFK a while back. But today her belly has turned a bright red and she's guarding a spot behind a log with my Grammodes. They're keeping all the other fish away. Doesn't the red belly mean female? And can a pike and grammodes make babies?

wow, that's crazy. You'd think they'd have to be too far off genetically to produce offspring.

Well, they stopped all that nonsense but I'm glad I got to see her like that. She's normally a dull tan color but she turned yellow with her gill plates being extremely bright yellow. Her belly was red and her tail and fins were almost black. Very cool looking...

thats very interesting ..i had my male saxatillis pair with my female loisellei years back but never laid eggs..

Hi any picture to show? My Sveni now 3" one look normal and the other pc with very red belly.
Any idea why is it so? Interesting.

Yep, if she has black blotches in the dorsal its definitely a female. Thats the problem with sexing them so small is that the Saxatilis group pikes are a little harder to sex at smaller sizes. Lugubris pikes you can generally look for the muscle striations or the clear/white band starting to form in the dorsal.

Congrats man, I'm super stoked for ya! Females blow the males away for sure! Get a male, and watch her really light up the tank!
