So, I keep all freshwater fish and my water is very hard and very alkaline and slightly (1.5 teaspoons/10g) salty. Does anyone know if these items would work on a FW tank?

Skimmer?

Deep sand bed/refugium?

Is there anything like live rock for freshwater?

Thanks,

Skimmer Saltwater skimmers do not work on fresh water aquariums. How ever there is a fresh water skimmer that has recently hit the market. Oddball has a thread on it some where.

Deep sand bed I am not familiar with it sorry

Live rock Yes Beneficial Bacteria. It attachés to every thing and live plants will also help filter the water

i was under the impression that the Remora could be used on either???

And live rock house BB and so however you acquire that is what matters

Thanks! I have base rock in the tank, but was thinking of putting base rock in sump much like on a salt water tank. I had heard somewhere that a Tanganyikan tank has enough salinity so that a skimmer would work, but I'll have to look into this freshwater skimmer idea (and the Remora, if it truly works on FW). Also, the guy at the LFS said that I would probably need to get a digital hydrometer to measure the salinity since the one I have isn't accurate enough to show the small differences in my tank. The deep sand bed I researched a little more since posting and don't think it would work on FW based on the chemistry differences.

I appreciate your feedback!!!
