Is it possible to have a 20g sw tank with fish only, and not use any live rock? Couldnt you just use a large HOB filter for filtration and throw on a protein skimmer?
you could but i would atleast seed the sand or crushed coral at a minimum... i would actually put atleast some live rock in the tank if you dont want "rocks" look at branch rock...
its completely fine if you dont want Live Rock.... You will need to use a media like matrix that can support some biological bacteria. Saltwater works very similar to freshwater as far as bacteria needing places to grow. Although Live Rock helps your tank a tremendous amount, it would be false to say sw could not be done without it.
This tank is already established with live rock and sand(not live sand), but I was planning on upping the filtration, adding a protein skimmer, and removing all the live rock because I dont like the look. What is matrix media? I was thinking of just using an AC50 with bio rocks. would this work?
untill about 2 weeks ago my 75 had no LR.. i used some old meadia from one of my other tanks and tried adding some bio-spira (i THINK it worked )
and my 10 gallon was FO for a while.. untill i got a light and added some LR from an old tank
Matrix is made by seachem. You can purchase it at any petsmart i believe. It acts like LR sort of lol. It allows bacteria a home to grow, but will not offer much for copepods and amphipods, etc..... Either way it will keep and maintain several populations of beneficial bacteria which will allow your tank to thrive without Live Rock.
