Hey MFK,

I've been out of touch for a while as University has got the better of me. So my folks have been in charge of my tank and done a wonderful job. Now I'm back I'd like ot make a few changes.

I'd like to swap the stone substrate out for white sand as the stones a very dull boreing colour and I feel its making the tank look rather dim.

I've spoken to one other fish keeper about this and he said it'd be fine just take the stone out over a week period in sections untill I have a glass bottom...tank. Then once its all out slowly put the sand in.

The tank is;
5'x2'x2.5'
1x Fluval Fx5
1x Eheim 2026 (I think)
1x HOB Fluval 3plus

I'm just worried that it'll effect the bio load to much, or when I put the sand in the filters will just guzzel it all.

Advice would be great and thanks in advance.

p.s. Sorry aobut the poor Gramma/spelling dyslexia + no spell check = disaster

turn the filters off when you dump the sand and let it settle before kicking them back on. other than that sounds like you got the right idea :D

they'll be fine. go with pool filter sand, it's very very clean right out of the bag.

this is what you should do..... do a 50% Water Change, but before you add the replacement water, take out the stones, dump in the sand(the water level being lower will make it easier to work with), place the stones back in the tank since they have all the tanks good bacteria. then i would add the replacement water, breaking the pour impact using a stone so as not to disperse the sand all over. slip a sponge or pantyhose over the intakes for the filters and this will prevent sand from being sucked up and destroying your impeller.

or just turn the filters off for 5 minutes....

The thing is I want the stones out of there for good, wont this just mean I have a sand/stone base? When I swap the stones out for the sand I'll leave for rocks/caves I have in there for a few weeks to keep the bacteria levels up.

Sorry if I've miss understood that.

Thanks for the reply

you were completely good with you're original idea bro. remove the gravel over a week or two, turn off the filters, dump sand, let settle, plug filters in, done...
