I grow some The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) around the flower beds at my house, they are very easy to take cuttings and grow very long roots very fast. Would this plant be safe to grow the cuttings in a sump?

I know when you take a cutting a milky white stuff comes out, i still use it in my koi pond and do not have any issues, but want to see what others think before i use it in my ray tank.

I see that others are using pothos vines in tanks and sumps, wondering if anyone has tried sweet potato, it grow very fast and created massive root systems.

I don't see why not. I used a form of taro root before. But mine was more of a decor than bio filtration.

If you do use it, you might want to take some established cuttings from the koi tank to use in the ray tank. If the fresh cuttings release a milky substance, I wouldn't chance it with rays.
