Out of curiosity and wishful thinking (nothing more): what fish make money and sell in the hobby, which can be bred by the hobbyist? Let us just say a hobbyist kitted out the garage so it was insulated and well heated with plumbing, and popped a few Rubbermaid containers in there? Again, just day-dreaming hehe, but would be good to hear points of view, and who knows what the future holds hey!

Wow, IMO hard to make money breeding as the time and money involved already. All your rare stuff makes money but that's the stuff that hasn't really been bred. You can bred some of the more available stuff but it doesn't sell for much.

Although Frontosa are supposed to be money makers. Also I would think RBP's would sell well most places just because of the hype so lfs' would want to buy them I think.

I have had sucess with devils i set up grow out ponds every summer from may-september i usualy raise 2 batches of fry:headbang2 .The first batch the oldest and just starting to change color i get 1 dollar for them at a lfs and the smaller ones go for .50-.75 cent each. The red devil is a common fish but is always in high demand :grinno: so the lfs will buy 2 or 3 hundred at a time i make between 300-500 dollars off them each season for the last 3 years. That money i take and buy a new aquarium related toy's so it does not offset the cost of raising them or taking care of the other fish it just propells me further into the hobby.:screwy: :naughty:

Although controvercial, you could potentially make money off of flowerhorns, if you had good quality parents. There is a strange market for them! Also of course usually the fish that are harder to breed or rarer. Electric Blue Jack Dempseys would probably make bank... although would take a long time! I would love to setup a breeding setup for them! But too much time and money for me.. and I lack space.

There are two things to have if you want to breed for money. 1) High priced easy to breed fish. Ex. zebra plecos, F1 frontosa, discus. 2) Easily bred, high yiled common fish. Ex. angelfish, bristlenose plecos and neon tetras. Of course there are other things to consider such as corydoras which an yield 40~200 per batch depending on the type, and fetch $.60~$10.00 each.
I do breed several things, but this is mostly just to recover some cost of the food I feed, nothing more. I don't make enough to even cover utilities with the money I get back from the breeding. Most of my money income from my aquariums comes from my planted tanks, where I can yield ~$100 per month. I also make a small amount on my ramshorn snails $15.00~$30.00 a month.
