i have a question? i was cleaning out my storage room and found a brand new, not use filter for a 300 gallon swimming pool. i was woundering if it will work for a fish tank with out harming the fish. if it does work, should i put some kind or gravel in there? thank for reading.

Yes it will work and you probably will throw it out after a short time. Pool filters aren't designed to run economically, quietly, under too much bio-load, or for continuous running.
Search the site. This subject has come up several times.

it will be killer on elctricity but yeah it will work just put some media in there and bingo you have a bio filter
