i have dovii in my tank with gravel right now bit i want to do black sand, is this a thing that i shouldnt be doing?

Cant see any reasons why not too. What type of filters do you have ? Just make sure the intakes atent too close to the sand and the filters are off while you add it.
if you have a canister, i'd be careful of the intake positioning; same for hob's too, just based on the dovii's potential to kick up a lot of sand when it potentially goes nuts
