Hey guys, I'm new to MFK but have been reading threads for awhile. I just got a 6" armatus a few weeks ago, as you all probably know they seemingly only take to live, I don't really have a good source of live besides roseys and minnows. I care so much about my fish I just want them as healthy as possible and on healthy diet. Please let me know things I can do to get him on prepared food!

Welcome to mfk. Glad to see you’re being proactive about your fish! Recently, my Tat has just begun eating pellets. Here’s some info I offered to another member here, hopefully it can help you as well.

Breaking an armatus off of live is definitely challenging. Payara aren’t like most fish where they’ll eat before they starve themselves to death. They have absolutely no problem dying for their preferred food convictions. One good piece of advice I’ve tried is to take a fish hook and cut it to about 1/4” below the eyelet, then tie the hook to a very fine piece of monofilament and pierce a piece of shrimp onto it. Then during feedings jerk it around a bit to simulate a living bit. This will act as a good middle ground to help them adjust and consider the market shrimp “food”. I had the luxury of bass that will hit anything I throw into the tank as well. If you have other fish already on market shrimp it will significantly help. But just remember, from what I’ve seen, when it comes to payara take it safe and slow. Feed him live every few days if he isn’t eating what you’re throwing in. Payara already have a tough time adjusting to aquaria And you’re basically trying to rewrite its basic instincts so don’t make them hate life. If you’re patient I’m sure he’ll adjust. Also just want to say I’m in no way a Payara expert these are just the methods that helped me and hopefully they can help you

That definitely sounds like a method that will work. I do have a few other fish that he certainly does see them eating krill. Do you think though at his early age and size this would be the time to start this method as I predict a starvation period?

I've used this for several fish (mostly native) and it works well to get them onto frozen food, albeit I've never done it with payara. I think another good bet is to get whole fish and stuff them full of pellets. That's what I mostly gave to my own predators as I believe a mixed diet is key and I didn't feel like putting in the work to get them to eat strictly pellets.

Wow yeah that definitely is a great tip!! So I can get him more nutrition then that from just the food source itself. You guys are awesome

By the way
This is a picture of Vladimir, the fish I believe to be hydrolocus armatus. I see alot of skepticism on these fish. Can anybody confirm his species? I was told to look at that black pattern behind his gills.

I’d say get him fat and then get at it because the longer you wait the harder of a habit it’ll be to break. Your guy looks great! Here’s a picture of my Tat, he just passed 13” 5C4E6934-E8E1-40BA-87B8-C53A3D1B0A6E.jpeg

Wow that is a impressive looking payara. You know getting on this thread I believe people have helped redirect my initial perspectives on this fish. I guess I may not have a armatus, rather then what you also have. A tatauaia like yours.
Do these pictures look like your guy when he was about 6-7"
