I plan on being as diverse as possible with my guys food but was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to best wean them on to pellets.

Any native fish will be somewhat difficult to convert to pellets, but if youre willing to let them go hungry for a few days its easier. This wont hurt the fish, and when they get hungry they will eat. They will first take the pellets and spit them out, which means they arent as hungry as they seem. Just feed a few at a time, and remove any uneaten, so as not to foul your tank.

GReat advice!

well no luck with the pellets yet, he wont even eat frozen foods, but i did get him to eat a worm today.

try and be persistent with blood worms
get him on that as well as brine shrimp
krill and once he hits that up he will eventually take to pellets and flake

Another method is to gradually fade into it. Start mixing frozen worms into his live worms for a few days. Then start adding other frozen foods to the frozen worms for another few days. Then start adding dried foods to the frozen foods and soon he'll eat almost anything you want him to. I have used this method on wild-caught sunfish that were refusing anything that wasn't kicking or wiggling. I don't know about SMB, but I'm about to convert my LMB over to pellets when his mouth is big enough and he can go a few days without food. He's too small right now.

Oh, that's a lot like what you were describing here:

yah i'm most likely going to slowly switch him over, that has always worked for my other natives, this is just my first SMB so we'll see how it goes.

well what kind of pellets are u tryin, try carnivore pellets , and dont feed the fish any thing els but pellets . fish can go a very long time without food give it a week or 2...when i had a smallmouth it would eat just about everything, it would even steal turtle pellets from the little turtles i had...
