i'm looking at picking up a 200gl (w/ 100gl sump) tank that has been used for the last couple years as a reef setup. do i need to do anything to make sure i don't have a salinity problem?

so i just have to rinse everything once and add a different substrate and thats it?

yea just give everything a good rinse and add freshwater.

i'd rinse everything, and buy a hydrometer to measure the salinity of the water, and then changing out water until the meter reads less than 1.005 ppm, that way you can be sure.

The tank I am picking up was just a salt tank and all I plan on doing is a good rinse and scrub.

you dont even need to do that

even if he was to add freshwater without rinsing it, the level of salt in the water will be undetectable :nilly:

yes, he doesn't NEED to. I just thought it might be a good idea.

just rinse, and that small amount of salt can't hurt the system. As for the bio substrate, just rinse it off to get any of the gunk that could have been trapped on it gets off of them. Then seed it and BAM! sump. I don't know why people make such a big deal about rinsing tanks out. There won't be anything to worry about.
