So in my short time with discus, I've come to realize that all fish are not created equal. In the never ending pursuit to keep wild discus in the best possible conditions, I've decided to switch to full RO/DI water.

I just purchased this 5 stage RO/DI unit from thefilterguys with 2x dual line TDS meters to take readings at 4 separate locations. This will feed my aging barrel, which I'll use for making daily 40g water changes on my 190g via my semi-automatic setup. This will eventually bring down my tank's TDS and GH to very low levels like found in the wild.

I'll be treating the RO/DI water with this stuff to replace the essential minerals that were stripped out.

Folks who have actually bred wild discus keep them GH levels of 70ppm-ish. My tap is at 180ppm+!!! I'm not looking to breed, but hopefully this will keep them happy the best possible coloration.

Anybody else using RO/DI water for discus / wild discus?

My wilds are thriving in non R0 water, I just use the carbon and DI sections to pre treat my water that I keep in 55 gal drums .

They seem to be OK in Missouri river water treated this way.. My domestics actually lay eggs in this water.

I only worry about GH in the egg hatching tanks..
