hey mfkers,
i was wanting to switch my 125 and 55 gallon tanks to sand from gravel. would this be a bad idea. both tanks are cichlid tanks. i just set up a ten a week ago with sand and really like thelook. ive also heard the water stays clearer. i s this true. any advice would be great. thanks

It doesnt really make your water clearer, but it would be good for a cichlid tank. From my experience it is really hard to clean sand in large aquariums. Fish will kick up sand plugging up the filter intake causing your filter to fail. Well thats if you have a hang on filter :)

use 3m color quartz- i use the black stuff- it really makes my geos colors pop!!!

i used the quikcrete playsand from homedepot. makes the tank brighten up real nice. you have to clean it real good. the tank will be cloudy for a week at the most cause your never gonna get the sand fully cleaned before you put it in. a small water change every day till the tank clears up is about it. it easy to clean to. you just take the tube of of a gravel vac and use that to clean the bottom

If you want cheep sand get pool filter sand its a lot corser. its ok
i agree
white pool filter sand. you dump it in a 5 gallon bucket and clean it there really good and your water will be cristal clear the next day.
i have a 220g, 75g and a 72 gallon with white pool filter sand and i never had a problem with the filters getting clogged and i have hang on, canister and wet dry filters, and is very easy to clean, 100 time easier than gravel
do for it man
the 75g and the 72g are cichlids tanks
