Hi guys,

I got an outdoor pond. I had an Iris plant I took out didn't like it. Anyway I want something That could grow tall. The pond depth is about 18 inches.I don't know what sword species it is. I grabbed some runners off my friends plant. I planted 2 of them in the pond. His plant is maybe around 16 inches if I had to guess.

Anyway, my concern is whether or not these swords will survive year round in the pond. I am in southern California and the coldest time in winter reaches the 40s.

I just saw this setup in Laguna Beach. The guy does put one 400 watt heater in the pond during winter. The Swords are HUGE and really flourishing and shooting runners etc. His pond was about 250 gallons and filled with swords, riccia, red cherry shrimp, red clouds and various guppies. It was an amazing setup.

I answered your question. You will need a heater in winter for most swords to survive. They can handle dips into the low 60's and possibly a little lower but beyond that is asking too much.
