Had a swordtail going into labor in a community tank. Wild type helleri. I only had 4 so the huge female going into labor was a treat to see, I pulled her into a large breeder box because I wanted to repopulate my group and fry wouldn't have survived in the tank with 16 buenos aires tetras. She freaked out for a bit and then calmed down and went back to the normal labor behaviors. Left her overnight, expected a box full of babies, got no babies, instead found dead mother. Now I have no females left.
Was the breeder box too stressful? I thought breeder boxes were fine if the thing was already in labor and that problems only occurred if you put her in too early. I also thought it would be better than putting her into her own tank because the one she was living in long term had parameters that were slightly off from the rest of my tanks, and the only tanks I could've put her in had breeding pairs of amatitlania with eggs and fry themselves.
