That is pretty interesting. I breed swordtails and have noticed the males w/ bloches are the dominate ones that get to breed. The ones that don't have those markings either turn female or die.
I have also seen a 4'' mature female turn male making a huge male. This is in absense of a male in that tank. Most of the successful breeding males start out as females.
In my experience, male swordtails have a shorter life then females. Maybe it was due to the cancer and I never knew it.
