Not sure where to put ths but they are centrral americans. i have just acquired a female platy and a male swordtail and i put them together alone in a 20 gal lon. will thay breed, and wil it be as prolific as if it were just platy platy, or sword sword. iu want them to breed, to make some feeders, and possibly to sell. thanks.

I am sorry to pee on your picnic but i dont think it is going to happen. Although both are live bearers, they are different species and i dont know if cross breeding between species is possible, although breeding between strains is definately possible.

Any other takers wanna chime in?

yup it can happen i have bred them togther alota times when i had swordtails back in the days. just get 3 more female platys and 2 more female swordtails then ur fine and ready to go

k movin ill post in hybrids, thanks though.

yes, swordtails and platys can hybridize. This is how they made different man-made strains of swordtails and platys.

To expand on meepster, the colorful swordail strains (most if not all) come from cross breeding with platies, which are naturally more colorful. So yes, you can do it. Personally I think wild sword tails are better looking than those mixed up domestics. To each his own...
