I've got an opinion & want to get opinions of others about SYMETRICAL vrs ASYMETRICAL bars on microlepis or any datnioide for that matter.

I've seen a few almost perfectly symetrical dats and a bunch with three bars on one side and four on the other. I think the symetry of the bars is similar to that of frontosa or demasoni...not required, but sometimes prefered. And if captive breeding occurs the symetrical barred dats will become the norm.

What do you think? Are the bars more often symetrical or asymetrical, and do you care?

Of the 13 I've got (all bought with in the last 4 months at 1.5inchs or less), only 5 dats have symetrical bars (only one dat has 3 symetrical bars) and the rest are asymetrical & 4 have three-bars on one side and 4 on the other.

Asymmetrical numbers of bars are most often found on Indonesian dats (D. microlepis). Other species of dats may exhibit some asymmetry in the configuration of bars but not in the number of bars. Some pulchers have split bars, but those count as a single bar, IMO, because they originate from a common point on the dorsal surface.

I see more that are symetrical, therefor I think asymmetrical is a bit more exciting i guess, because you see them less. But It wouldnt make a difference to me.

I like the asymetrical ones better but thats just my opinion. I think when it comes to dats the general population preffers the symetrical ones, especially when it comes to pulchers. I only have 3 indo dats, and 2 of them have split bars. These two have 3 thick bars on one side, and then a split middle bar on the other side. One of them is actually developing a little black dot in between where the bar splits, which I think is pretty uncommon. The other one has 4 almost perfectly symetrical bars on each side. They all look cool, but I guess I just like the "oddness" of the split or uneven bars better.

Has anyone raised a group from tiny to monster? And is the stripe pattern fixed or does it change (like the crenicichla patterns)?

Beachman, by dot between the split bar do you mean a bloch on the side or more like a partial bar between the split?

use to like asymetrical, but now im liking the symetrical a lot more. brings out the beauty of natural perfection... which is probably not 100% perfect all the time, but from the naked eye at least

perfect stripes both sides with a full necklace for me :D

i can over look the full necklace if the color of the tiger is good

perfect stripe perfect color = perfect tiger :D

i have had some forked bar ST but as soon as i find a perfect stripe to replace it i normaly sell the forkys on

at the monent i have 5 x 12inch perfect stripe ST 4 of them have full necklace the 1 without the necklace has the best color of all of them :D

I assume you see more non-"perfect" dats then those of the perfect variety- correct?

Were all the "perfect dats" large or have you found small ones with full necklaces?
