I created an ID thread a little back in february regarding a small syno that I purchased and the general out come was that he was a syno hybrid of some sort.

I am really hoping someone could give my some input on what two syno's would be used to get a cat like this as i want to get an idea of how big he will grow. I am a little alarmed at how fast he is growing and is probably 4/5 times the size he was under 2 months ago!!!!

Apologies on the pic quality, it was feeding time and the little guy moves so fast!!!

It looks alot like a hybrid, in one of my tanks, except for the bigger dots, but that should very.
Mine is around 15 - 20cm, and i doubt it will get larger. Maybe its another kind of hybrid, that one. Mines fins dont match that one, i think.
Good luck.

No doubt IMO it is this hybrid http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=602 Look through all the photos as the appearance is variable. Called valentiana syno, jaguar syno, and other silly invented names. Appears the most common hybrid sold in the US and EU. Hails from the "breeders" from Eastern Europe.

One of the parents is likely a euptera, so no more than a foot SL or rather even TL. None of mine dozen or so exceeded a foot TL.

No one uses really any syno larger than a foot for commercial hybridization... with any measure of success anyway. The giants are all too expensive and rare. So, hybrid owners can rest assured their little "frankensteins" won't exceed 12", usually even 8"-10".

I have 3 of these exact same fish. They were labeled as a syno hybrid. I've had mine for 2.5 years and have always been in a 75g with lots of room. In the time I've had them they've grown from 2" to >6". There has not been any noticeable growth in the last year so I'm pretty certain they have reached their max.
Good luck getting a better answer but I'm interested to see what anyone else's has to say about them too.

Thanks, Amber. I'd say yes this sounds typical.

With adequate husbandry, they will likely grow bigger because the "meatiest" part of the bell curve "size versus number" is around 9" total length (TL).
